In the southern Brazilian city of Blumenau, in the state of Santa Catarina, you will find yourself in Germany!
The city’s culture, architecture, cuisine, and its beers take their inspiration from Germany. The city was founded in 1850 by Hermann Bruno Otto Blumenau who arrived with other compatriots from Germany. They brought with them their hopes and dreams of starting a new life on the banks of the Itajaí-Açu River. Packed into their luggage were also hops and malt, and so, it was not long before Blumenau became the craft beer capital of Brazil. The hilly area around Blumenau is also deal for vineyards – Pinot Noir being the winemakers’ choice. The region has become to be known as the ‘Beer Valley’, with waves of craft breweries setting up and creating new styles of beers.
is proud of the brewery’s heritage and values the local culture. Capivara Little IPA and Ipê Amarelo Hop Lager are named after the fauna and floral of the region. Today Cerveja Blumenau is an award-winning craft brewer with their beers taking pride of place in international beer awards, including the European Beer Star and the Brussels Beer Challenge.
For Valmir Zanetti, together with his team, the focus is on expanding the brand across Brazilian. Investments to date have been on three fronts with a combined focus on quality, consistency, innovation, and creating great tasting beers:
Cerveja Blumenau and AEB began with detergents for surface cleaning and CIP. That soon expanded into other AEB expertise areas, particularly in yeast, fermentation, aroma and flavour developments, and process and production optimisation.
With the support of AEB Brewing, Brewmaster and Industrial Manager Marcos Guerra and Production brewer João Marcos, continue to innovative with non-alcohol beers using AEB’s FERMO Brew Citrus yeast, one of a range of aromatic yeasts specifically selected for creating aroma in low- and non-alcohol beers. There is always particular interest in sour beers using AEB Brewing’s FERMO Brew Acid yeast.
The Cerveja Blumenau journey continues with a deep-rooted sense of community and collaboration, and passion for creating great tasting beers.
